Most people tend to associate term microwave with microwave ovens, which is natural and perfectly all right, since microwave ovens operate at frequencies within the microwave and wireless frequency band. However, microwaves are not used just to cook food but are practically inevitable in all aspects of the modern human life. Radio and television programs are transmitted using microwaves. Cellular phone communication is powered by microwaves. Wireless LANs are operated by microwaves. Telephone and data signals are transmitted by microwave relays. Military aircrafts, missiles, ships and tanks are guided and controlled by microwave radars. Microwave based navigation systems are used to safely guide commercial airplanes from takeoff to landing. Photos and other data taken by space probes are being sent to earth by microwaves. Microwaves are used in medical treatment of cancer patients, and so on. As a consequence of such a broad application range, microwaves have become big business, too, and the microwave market is expected to grow as new equipment for communications, navigation, radars and other applications is being continually developed.
