SIA is doubling the size of a university-based semiconductor research program established in 1998. The industry association will add two projects to the national network of universities in its Focus Center Research Program. Discussions are also underway to add two more programs at a later date. The center will funnel approximately $500 million to the universities over a 10-year period. The program's goal is to find solutions for unresolved technical issues in the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors. The program receives 50% of its funds from the semiconductor industry, 25% from equipment manufacturers, and 25% from the U.S. Department of Defense. The Microelectronics Advanced Research Corp., a subsidiary of the Semiconductor Research Corp., manages the program.
