LIKE THE WORK OF many midcentury icons, the designs of the late Danish-born Jens Risom are still being unearthed. This spring, Design Within Reach (DWR) introduced a previously unproduced Risom furniture design, originally imagined for his A-frame vacation home (which he also designed) on Rhode Island's Block Island. After his death in 2016, Risom's family found the drawings and took them to DWR, which had worked with the designer for years. "We were intrigued," says Noah Schwarz, director of merchandising for the company. "Here was this design Jens drew for the comfort of his family, a labor of love never realized." The newly unveiled Block Island Furniture Collection encompasses a lounge chair, two-seater sofa, and coffee table, all made of teak-a favorite material among Nordic designers and one whose durability and water resistance make it well suited to weathering the elements.
