This collection is a valuable addition to the growing literature innthe field of disability studies, and in particular the new work in dis-nability history. The recent rapid international development of dis-nability history is a recognition of its worth in illuminating hownsocieties give value to physical and intellectual attributes and hownthese change over time. Nonetheless the field is a diverse one, andnone that in a variety of guises has engaged historians for many dec-nades. Indeed, the streams of historical study that make up thisnbroad field of enquiry reflect the changing attitudes and beliefs sur-nrounding it.
