Rusal/Sual deal to rival Alcoa as largest aluminum producer

London—Russian aluminum major Rusal's intent to take over all the assets of domestic rival Sual as well as the alumina assets of Swiss trading giant Glencore will challenge US aluminum producer Alcoa for the position of the world's top aluminum producer, according to a source close to the companies. The three-way merger, estimated to be worth $30 billion, would result in the yet-to-be-named newly formed group being a formidable force in the global aluminum industry. Based on 2005 figures, the combined company would produce 4 million mt/year of aluminum and 11 million mt/year of alumina. Rusal alone produced 2.71 million mt of aluminum in 2005. Alcoa produced 3.554 million mt, and Alcan 3.326 million mt of aluminum last year.
