New York-International Ferro Metals'rnconfirmation last week that it isrnsuspending production at its two ferrochrome furnaces in South Africa is being viewed as further evidence of the collapse in demand on a global scale for this vital input into stainless steel, according to traders. The move followed a major cutback by Xstrata Alloys last month, which suspended production at six of its furnaces in South Africa, representing 500,000 mt/year of chargernchrome capacity and around 29% of the capacity at its Xstrata-Merafe chrome venture.
