Lead smelters may face new EpA rules

US nsecondary lead smelters may be facing stricter air emission nstandards, the US Environmental Protection Agency said last nweek. The agency said it is proposing new standards that nwould cut lead and arsenic emissions by 63% and would, nfor the first time, require lead smelters to control emissions nof dioxins. EPA said lead smelters would have the option to nchoose the most practical and cost-effective emissions control ntechnology to cut their emissions, technology that the agency nsaid is readily available and already in use by many lead nsmelters. The agency said the new standards would cover nfewer than 20 secondary smelters located in the US. EPA said nit is required to issue a final rule on the new air standards by nDecember 2011.
