Sydney—The global alumina market is expected to movenfrom a surplus of 1 million to 1.5 million mt in 2012 to an100,000 mt deficit in 2013, with the shortage deepening ton1.7 million mt in 2014, according to John Bevan, the chiefnexecutive of Alumina Ltd. The current alumina supply overhangnis not sustainable, Bevan told the Macquarie Australia Conference in Sydney May 3, as half of global refiners,nexcluding the Chinese, are struggling to remain cash positivenat recent prices.
