This article is about metal finishing-mostly about metal, and particularly about aluminum. In April 2006, I wrote a column about stainless steel. The aim of the column and this article is to review what metal finishers take for granted-the basic data about the metal feed stocks they use. Various grades of stainless steel and aluminum make up the vast majority of metal substrates to which finishers apply their skills. This article is a response to requests from clients and some readers about what quality of metal materials should be used in cleaning equipment and many other applications; how those materials are manufactured; and how surface finishes of various qualities are attained.
