The Holdstock-Piachaud Prize 2010

The Holdstock-Piachaud Student Essay Prize was devised by Medicine, Conflict and Survival to encourage student engagement with the medical peace movement and named in memory of the late editors, Douglas Holdstock and Jack Piachaud. Douglas Holdstock was a gastroenterologist, scholar and eminent peace activist. He was a founder member of the Medical Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons, which formed Medact in the 1990s. He edited the journal for over 20 years with accomplished precision and sensitivity. Jack Piachaud combined his profession as a child psychiatrist with extensive voluntary work, such as with the Medical Foundation for Victims of Torture, Medact, and in the Balkans and Zimbabwe. He was erudite and driven by compassion and insight. He was also an inspirational teacher who led by example. Both supported younger people's involvement in the journal, and it seemed fitting to create an essay prize to continue this encouragement.
