Modern production standards and the demands for high quality and traceability have prompted private gear manufacturers to seek a calibration service more credible than that offered by private companies. As a result, gear engineers working in industry, government, and universities have formed the Gear Metrology Consortium to offer a calibration service that is traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in Gaithersburg, Md. The service, called the Deployment of a National Infrastructure for Gear Metrology program, will be administered by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Such a service has not been available in the United States for nearly a decade.
