The 1994 season was a dangerous one on the Formula One racing circuit. After a dozen years without a serious accident, two of the circuit's leading drivers were killed on consecutive days, followed by a critical head injury to a third driver several weeks later. In response to the accidents, a series of safety-related rules changes were mandated to slow the cars down and increase driver protection. The changes affected the design of virtually the entire vehicle, from body form to engine power and overall weight. In all, approximately 90 percent of the Formula One car design had to be changed. One significant result of the changes is the McLaren racing team's MP4/10, the first Formula One car to be totally CAD-designed.
