After years of recession, the shipbuilding industry is booking new orders at an increasing pace as in-ternational trade flourishes and commercial shippers replace aging fleets. Shipbuilders that survived the oil crises of the 1970s and the drastic reduction in demand of the 1980s are, in some cases, scrambling to fill these orders, and they are looking to their engineering departments to craft a strategy that will boost productivity and cut the time to market.
