The Wider World of Thermowells

Thermowells are process-critical components that protect thermometers from harsh industrial fluids. They got their own ASME performance test code this past summer. The standard, PTC 19.3 TW-2010 Thermowells, is a considerable expansion over the material ASME has published about these devices in years past. PTC 19.3 TW-2010 is a complete revision of the original supplement and is now issued as an independent standard. The new standard incorporates a wide range of new developments in fluid dynamics, fatigue fracture, and fluid-structure interactions. The standard also incorporates a comprehensive set of correlations that captures, in a user friendly way, the results of extensive finite-element mechanical modeling of common thermowell designs over a broad range of dimensions.
