I first met Tony Kelly at a cricket match in Birmingham some forty years ago when, as I recall, he exhibited much elegance of style but didn't actually score many runs. This was his single blemish in an otherwise uninterrupted series of lifetime achievements. He had a pleasing appearance, was articulate and was very much a representative of the higher echelons of English social classes (though having had the benefit of having mixed with all cadres of society). Half way through his seventh decade, Kelly has retained his good looks, still speaks felicitously and is even more of a patrician. As far as his aristocratic provenance is concerned, I have long suspected that, like Jonathan Porritt, he is a secret 'Hon', and a friend of the Prince of Wales - though he probably finds the Prince a little too left-wing for his tastes.
