Effect of additives on particle characteristics of barium titanate nanopowder by hydrothermal synthesis

Influence of sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate (SDBS), dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, polyethylene glycol 2000, isopropanol, and ethanol on the characteristics of BaTiO3 (BT) powder was studied. The results showed that the addition of SDBS would decrease the particle size of BT powder. However, superabundant amount of SDBS would lead to the formation of BaSO4. Dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride and polyethylene glycol had little influence on the particle size. Proper addition of each surfactant would improve the dispersity of BT powder. The particle size would decrease with the addition of isopropanol and ethanol. The improvement in the dispersity was much better than the former three kinds of surfactants. When the concentration of isopropanol or ethanol was 25%, the BT powder had the best dispersity. However, an excess of isopronpanol or ethanol was adverse to completion of reaction and the particle size distribution. Increasing the temperature could help complete the reaction and decrease the range of the particle size distribution of BT powder.
