Field observations about the waterjetting of bridges have been made after 5 years of hand-held high-pressure (HP) and ultra high-pressure (UHP) waterjetting upon spot removal and overcoating of the Quebec Bridge. The bridge is constructed with riveted and bolted steel (Figure 1). The requirement was to HP water-clean the entire structure and spot clean all rusted areas at UHP. This was followed by an overcoat paint system. All stratified rust or rust scale was to be removed. Tightly adhered, old lead-based paint was allowed to remain. Criteria required that the system meet a Rust Grade 9 Warranty after 2 and 5 years.
