There are many ways that an operator can avoid low potential issues from unwanted AC-DC connections. The first is providing an understanding of the CP process to the designers and engineers of other systems for the pipeline company. If the potential CP issues can be discussed and input provided to the engineers during the design process, most problems can be avoided. But, even with the best planning, there may be instances where a low potential issue occurs because of the coupling of the different electrical systems. At this point, the operator must choose the best remediation and cost-effective measures as stated above. Many factors may influence these decisions, such as location, cost, and materials. With careful thought and consideration, all stakeholders in the process can be satisfied.
