Challenges in Sustaining the World's Bridge and Highway Infrastructure

The health and safety of bridge and highway infrastructure continues to be a focal point of public discussion worldwide. In the United States alone, ~24% of highway bridges are rated as deficient by the Federal Highway Administration.1 In its latest report card for American infrastructure, the American Society of Civil Engineers gave roads a grade of "D-" and bridges a grade of "C," and estimated the total five-year investment needs for bridges and roads would be $930 billion.2
