A case study was conducted by CM BEASY to predict the protection provided by the cathodic protection (CP) design for an actual ballast tank in a ship. The goals were to ensure protection was provided to the tank while minimizing the costs. A three-dimensional model was constructed using modeling software, and anodes were placed in the ballast tank model in accordance with the initial CP design. The conditions of the tank were specified (seawater resistivity and coating breakdown factors), and a color-coded computational mesh was generated. The colors indicate the potentials inside the tank, and range from blue, which indicates the most protected areas (potentials more negative than -966 mV) to red, which indicates the least protected areas (potentials more positive than -850 mV).
