Corrosion technology students at Seward County Community College/ Area Technical School (SCCC/ATS) (Liberal, Kansas) had a unique opportunity to practice their trade as well as protect their campus from corrosion. When the copper piping in the college's indoor swimming pool filtration system was showing signs of severe corrosion, students from several of the college's corrosion classes were called on to find a solution and carry out repairs. Last spring, the college's facilities director approached Curt Near, NACE International member and the school's corrosion technology instructor at the time, about the copper piping located in the pool's pump/filtration room. The piping was rapidly corroding and leaks were a constant problem. Replacement piping used when making repairs would show signs of corrosion within months of installation and the director wanted to avoid a total replacement of the copper piping system, which was estimated to cost ～$80,000. He asked Near if there was a coating that would protect the piping.
