For a given oil or gas production system, the corrosion mitigation strategy for selecting suitable metallurgy is typically based on the fluid properties, operating parameters, and design life of the facilities. Capital expenditure (CapEx) constraints drive the design to utilize carbon steel (CS) lines with corrosion mitigation using chemical inhibitors. Often, these design considerations are based on corrosion prediction by some commercial user-friendly software packages that do not reflect the complexity of the corrosion issues. Since the magnitude of the corrosion-related economic impact has significantly increased because of the escalation in the mitigation cost, the life cycle cost analysis needs to include the complexity and uncertainty of the extent of corrosion and its mitigation.
