Armor is traditionally considered only as strong as its weakest point, and a chink could lead to life-threatening consequences, which highlights the significant dangers of a breach. A defect within a protective coating is similar to a chink in armor. Any weakness in the coating can expose the substrate beneath, which allows the destructive forces of corrosion and erosion to degrade the metal surface. Within the coating industry, these defects are referred to as holidays-areas of the substrate that have not been properly coated and present as discontinuities in the coating film. This includes misses, inadequate coating thicknesses, inclusions, and pinholes, all of which register as anomalies.
