The consequences of high-temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA) can be disastrous, and researchers are working to contribute to its understanding to help predict, detect, and prevent these events in the future. HTHA results in progressive degradation of carbon and low-alloy steels when they are exposed to hydrogen gas at high temperatures for an extended amount of time. A notable dilemma with HTHA is its difficulty to detect. Coupled with potentially erroneous information in related industry standards, failure appears imminent.
