This paper demonstrates the feasibility of using mussel shells and soda-lime glass powders for preparing dicalcium silicate (Ca2SiO4, C2S), by solid state reaction, then to synthesis hydroxyapatite, (Cato (PO4)(6)(OH)(2), HAp), by soaking the powder of dicalcium silicate in a biological medium for a variety of time periods from 2 h to 5 days. The specimens are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results shows that solid state reaction method allows the synthesis of dicalcium silicate powder by heating mixture of mussel shells and the soda-lime glass powders at 1050 degrees C. The results also shows that the hydroxyapatite is formed after soaking dicalcium silicate powder in total human blood for 20 h and growth up to 5 days. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
