Zigzag line defect in friction stir butt-weld of ferritic stainless steel

A zigzag line defect was detected in the stir zone (SZ) of friction stir butt-welded 12% Cr ferritic stainless steel joint. The characteristics and formation cause of the zigzag line defect was clarified and analyzed. The zigzag line defect presented the partly bonded feature but with relatively higher hardness, which did not affect the tensile properties at room temperature of the joint. The micro-void features of the zigzag line defect were considered to promote crack propagation under impact load, thereby significantly reducing the impact toughness of the SZ. (c) 2021 Elsevier B.V.
