Solvent-Free Synthesis of Mg_xZn_(1-x)O Powders from Solid Raw Materials

In this work, we demonstrated here a simple and generalized solvent-free route for synthesizing Mg_xZn_(1-x)O alloy powders by mixing, grinding, and heating solid raw materials. Mg_xZn_(1-x)O precursors were obtained by the intimate mixing of zinc acetate 2-hydrate, magnesium acetate 4-hydrate and a carboxylic acid. We investigated the effects of different carboxylic acids on the structural and optical properties of Mg_xZn_(1-x)O ternary alloy powders, and found that the chemical structure of the carboxylic acid can significantly influence the properties of the Mg_xZn_(1-x)O alloys. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicates that no significant phase separation was observed when the Mg content lower than 0.2. The UV-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra show that the band gap of Mg_xZn_(1-x)O alloys can be effectively modulated by changing the species of the carboxylic acids and the molar ratio of precursors.
