Effect of B_2O_3 Addition on Structure and Properties of SiO_2-R_2O-BaO-ZnO Glasses

Lead-free glasses with SiO_2-R_2O-BaO-ZnO (R = Na, K) system have been prepared by the conventional melt quenching technique. Lead was replaced by barium and zinc, thus, we fundamentally solve the problem of lead dissolution in the decorative glass. And B_2O_3 was added to obtain excellent properties. The effect of B_2O_3 content on structure and properties of the glass were examined. The FT-IR studies have been employed to study the role of B_2O_3 on the structure of the investigated glass system. The density of the glasses was measured by Archimedes method. Thermal expansion coefficients were tested using Dilatometer. The result showed that: as the content of B_2O_3 increases, thermal expansion coefficient decreased from 91.42 × 10~(-7) ℃~(-1) to 70.42 × 10~(-7) ℃~(-1). Refractive index value were between 1.559 and 1.565, and it reached a maximum value at B_2O_3 mol% = 12, this value was greater than lead decorative glass. The glass transition temperature showed a trend of increase with the content of B_2O_3 increased from 4 to 20 mol%.
