In this work, a sol-gel autocombustion route was proposed to synthesize Mg_xZn_(1-x)O ternary alloy powders, using various fuels such as citric acid, glycine and urea. We investigated the effects of different fuels on the structural and optical properties of Mg_xMn_(1-x)O ternary alloy powders. The phase composition and optical properties in the presence of different fuels are compared. When the Mg content is low, no significant phase separation was observed as determined by X-ray diffraction measurements. The UV-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra show that the band gap of Mg_xZn_(1-x)O powders can be facilely tuned by optimizing the molar ratio of precursors and the species of the combustion fuel. The optical absorption edge of the powders blue-shifted initially and then red-shifted with the increase of annealing temperature, which indicates that the incorporation of Mg~(2+) ions into ZnO lattices is a function of annealing temperature.
