Toward the end of the last century physicists accepted the attitude that there was little new to be discovered in physical science and accordingly strove mostly to attain greater accuracy in physical mensuration. One notable exception, however, was a relatively small group of cathode ray investigators comprising such well-known names as Hittorf, Geissler, Crookes, Hertz, Lenard and Rontgen.
