Selecting materials for special applications presents a particularly difficult task for purchasing departments. Blueprints and specifications may indicate carbon steel as the material required. The product, however, may be a specialty item such as a roll for a paper mill, printing equipment, laminating machines, or some other type of machinery with rolls. These require a smooth, flaw-free surface and usually some type of expensive nickel or chromium plating on the roll surface. The selection of standard commercial materials in many cases will not produce the quality needed to supply a satisfactory part.
