Evaluation of a Reusable Phosphor X-Ray Detector

The images from a reusable storage phosphor X-ray detector are compared to those of a film-lead-screen combination at X-ray energies of ~24 MeV, ~2.5 MeV, Co-60, ~300 kV, ~150 kV, and ~75 kV, which span industrial X-ray inspection energies. The signal of the latent image stored on the phosphor is proportional to the X-ray dose received and is extracted by stimulating the phosphor with a secondary source (HeNe laser). Blue light emitted by the phosphor is collected and detected by a photomultiplier tube, converted to a digital signal, and stored on 8 mm video tape or on a hard disk to be digitally enhanced. Background levels on the phosphor are virtually nonexistent, but the screens must be properly erased before each use to remove latent images from previous exposures. After the latent image has been extracted, the phosphor is erased and stabilized using lamps that emit light at 589 nm. It is then ready to record another image. Usually, the phosphor was exposed to 0.01 to 0.5 the dose received by the film. The reusable phosphor detects at the 3.3 percent level using a steel cylinder and steel image quality indicators, and at the 1.5 percent level using an inert, mock high-explosive cylinder with an aluminum quality indicator.
