The surface states of binary ganglioside G_(T1b) (GT1b)/dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) and ternary GT1b/dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC)/DOPC monolayers were investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the results were compared with those of the ganglioside G_(D1a) (GD1a) binary and ternary monolayers. The GT1b/DOPC (4 : 6) binary monolayer showed flower-like domains in the matrix, as shown in the GD1a/DOPC (4 : 6) monolayer. The change in morphology of the GTlb/DOPC (4 : 6) monolayer with increasing surface pressure was, however, different from that of the GDla/DOPC (4 : 6) monolayer. The GT1b/DPPC/DOPC (4:6:6) ternary monolayer showed no percolation pattern and the change in morphology of the monolayer with increasing surface pressure was a little, while the GD1a / DPPC / DOPC (4:6:6) monolayer showed a percolation pattern and the monolayer changed markedly the morphology with increasing surface pressure. On the contrary, the GT1b/DPPC/DOPC (2 : 6 : 6) monolayer showed a percolation pattern and the morphology changed markedly by varying the surface pressure, while the GD1 a/DPPC/DOPC (2:6:6) monolayer showed no percolation pattern and no significant change in morphology by varying the surface pressure. These results suggest that each ganglioside plays a specific role in each organ.
