We are all aware that scientific progress generally does not have much regard for human calendar dates, even if it is a well rounded date like a Millennium. Progress continues, whatever the year. Even so, the millennium for much of the world is something of a landmark, and one marked by numerous events including increased spending in several scientific areas. Millennium or not, however, pressures on our seas continue, even (sometimes especially) in those parts of the world which follow different calendars anyway.
