Fifteen adult glaucous gulls, Larus hyperboreus, were captured in the vicinity of Ny-Alesund, Svalbard. The birds were kept captured and fed a diet of polar cod, Boreogadus saida, caught off the coast of Spitsbergen. After 40 days of captivity the birds were killed. The presence of hepatic homologues to mammalian CYP1A and CYP2B proteins was demonstrated by Western blotting. High concentrations of PCBs were found in the liver (median ∑PCB 111 ugg~-1 lipid), but hepatic EROD activity was low and significantly negatively correlated with concentra- tions of PCB-congener nos 28, 47, 66,74,105 and 187 in the liver.
