It was October 1999 when Apple launched the iMac DV (the first consumer Mac to feature FireWire) along with iMovie - easy-to-use editing software 'for the rest of us'-and in doing so gave birth to a new generation of amateur filmmakers. Apple's iMovie (and its more grown-up sibling Final Cut Pro), together with the availability of low-cost DV camcorders, now make it possible for anybody to create professional-looking films. Four years after iMovie's launch, amateur filmmaker Jonathan Caouette famously used the software to produce the multiple award-winning documentary Tarnation - proving that the 'iMovie generation' had come of age.
