The first edition of this textbook from a team of well-known linguists at the University of Essex was published in 1999. Chapters have been updated and new material added for this revised edition.rnThere are many introductions to linguistics available, so what does this one have to offer as a unique selling point? The first is that the multiple authorship means that the contents are reliable and accurate, with writers contributing on their areas of expertise, rather than a single author trying to cover a lot of ground. But the arrangement of chapters is the most noticeable difference from other texts. Rather than starting with phonetics, grammar, semantics, and then going on to topics such as child language and sociolinguistics, this introduction is divided into three main parts, sounds, words and sentences, each beginning with basic structural information before going on to the connections to acquisition, processing, and so on.
