With its silver and black-trim finish and rounded body lines, the upscale SW2 version of the 1997 Saturn station wagon looked sharp enough on the outside. Inside, it appeared, shall we say, functional. Nothing special. What one might expect of an auto celebrated primarily for reliability and service. This also seemed to be the feeling of another auto writer who handed it over to me following his testing. He confided, too, that this Saturn lacked pep and performed sluggishly. And he advised me that he was told to ignore the red warning light on the dashboard. "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" flashed periodically, but not to worry. He had checked and was told it might have something to do with a change of gasoline brands or a loose gas cap or such. But ignoring that warning turned out to be bad advice.
