Paul raimond's recent contribution to long Range planning ("Two Styles of Foresight; Are we Predicting the Future or inventing It?') was of great Interest to us because it provided insight into the Obvious differences in strategic management Approaches of Western firms vis-a-vis their Eastern Rivals. While the article sheds considerable light on The differences in strategic approaches, it does not Reveal the underlying stimuli that my spawn the vari- Ation. We believe Western firms will find it difficult To anticipate and to position themselves strtegically Against the moves of their Eastern counterparts with- Out understanding the cultural underlay that subtly Yet powerfully motivates the divergence. Perhaps our emerging research will provide some useful insight.
