Arctic shipping has come a long way since the ABS-classed SS Manhattan became the first commercial ship to conquer the ice-bound Northwest Passage in 1969. Today, with around 500 high ice-class ships currently in service or on order, the hype built up around an inevitable surge in Russian oil and gas shipments through Arctic regions has operators, who previously would have shunned this difficult trade, speculatively ordering ships.
