The Spatial Humanities: GIS and the future of humanities scholarship

What are the Spatial Humanities? This question has been the subject of countless workshops, papers, seminars, blog posts, and articles, some of which were organized or written by this author, in the past 10 years. As an expression of those strands of the humanities explicitly concerned with location, the term 'spatial turn' has emerged both within and alongside the Digital Humanities. The spatial humanities seem to share, in particular, the latter's focus on methodology, and the software tools used to execute research methods.
