摘要

A newly formed nonprofit organization, Creative Commons (http://www.creativecommons.org), has developed a new system wherein any kind of creator can designate how his or her content may be used, both within the public domain and outside it. Lawrence Lessig, one of the leading advocates of the role of the public domain in the intellectual property field, fears that recent developments in intellectual property law are moving us as a society away from freedom - especially the freedom to spread ideas that our new technologies can allow - toward greater control. He sees powerful interests depleting "the commons," the reservoir of resources accessible to all. One of the purposes of the Creative Commons is to create a "lawyer-free zone," as Lessig calls it, that would lower the costs for people who want to make their work available in the public domain.
