Daylighting offers environmental, economic and social benefits when applied successfully; however, poor use of daylight causes unwanted heat and glare problems that negate any desired benefits. In order to develop effective daylighting practices, a reliable method for assessing discomfort glare for occupants is required. The magnitude of discomfort glare in daylighting situations can be determined via empirical formulae known as glare indices; however, the accuracy with which these formulae can predict discomfort glare is low. The main aim of this study was to use High Dynamic Range imaging (HDRi) to capture the luminance distribution within a daylit scene and use this information to quantify the physical parameters of glare. This paper discusses computational tools that extract corrected luminance data from HDR images and calculate the physical parameters used in glare assessment. Using the results obtained for a number of field images, the magnitude of discomfort glare was determined using the Dayliqht Glare Index (DGI).
