Award of Commendation to Ash Downthwaite, Tony Dowthwaite Lighting Design Pty Ltd, for the Recreation Deck/Pools at the Hilton - Surfers Paradise, Surfers Paradise

The recreation deck for the recently completed Surfers Paradise Hilton Hotel is located two levels above the street. It comprises water features, softscape landscape, hardscape circulation areas, food and beverage, and a 25m lap-pool that dominates the southern boundary of the site. A number of landscape/exterior lighting techniques have been used to differentiate the hotel from similar Gold Coast properties. An example is the overflow weir around the perimeter of the water feature located between the residential and hotel towers. For regulatory safety reasons, the weir was required to have a grate installed to avoid young children being injured.
