Anew two-level extension was added to the Caneland Centre located in Mackay.The design intent was to provide a retail destination with a 'Far North Queensland' rural feeling with a bit of high street'shopping experience. The lighting design strategy placed emphasis on perception rather than purely lighting to see by'. Lighting can lead and entice, it can be dramatic or subdued. In retail it needs to be inviting; way finding or circulation lighting provides direction and should not take away from the retail display. Uplighting to give a sense of space is essential, unless the mall is themed and a theatrical effect required.
