Smart poles have been a much discussed subject over the past few years because of their potential as a means of more precise location services than those provided by cellular phone transmitters because, by using li-fi (light) rather than wi-fi (wireless transmission) objects (eg people) can be more precisely located, since road lighting poles are more closely spaced than cellular phone towers, although that may change with the 5G system. To some extent, the smart poles have been a technology looking for applications.
