Designers, Owners Weigh Recession's Impact

As the economy worsens, the strain is being felt by everyone, lighting professionals included. The International Association of Lighting Designers recently conducted a survey to determine how the current economic downturn is affecting IALD members and their businesses. The fol-lowing is a summary of the survey results. Impact: When asked how their businesses have been impacted by the world financial crisis, three-fourths of all respondents said they are experiencing either a strong or slightly negative impact. Interestingly, 11 percent of respondents reported a positive impact and 14 percent reported no change. Of those with a negative impact, more than half (53 percent) have experienced a tightening of expenses or spending freeze due to the economic climate, and 28 percent have experienced hiring freezes. On a positive note, 29 percent have experienced no cutbacks.
