Yulia Tyukhova is well on her way to a Ph.D. in Architectural Engineering-Lighting atthe University of Nebraska-Lincoln that focuses on discomfort glare, luminance-based metrics and other areas. After that, will it be teaching and research-the traditional purview of the Ph.D.-or perhaps industry? For Tyukhova, all options are on the table. "The broad and multidisciplinary area of lighting has a lot of exciting and challenging problems to work on. Are there any trends in human behaviortriggered by the lighting? Can they be fit into models, equations and numbers [and help us] predict the impact of lighting on humans' well-being, performance, comfort, achievement and health, and make our environment much better? In the end, it is research that shapes lighting trends and design," she says, "but I wantto stay open-minded for upcoming opportunities."
