Miho Institute of Aesthetics Chapel

Situated within a new academic campus is a legendary architect's final project. The challenge for the lighting designers was that this unusual building is virtually all wall, no ceiling. In the chapel, there are only three lighting elements: a circular chandelier overhead, a cove where the walls meet the floor and a stanchion supporting a line of AR111 gimbals lighting the altar. The key light source is a 12-meter diameter circular pendant, suspended from three points and structured like a bicycle wheel with a steel tube core and three spokes. In the hub, six AR111 lamps light the altar. Seamless dimmable fluorescent lamps have right angle electrodes to provide continuous light, with one lamp serving each facet, illuminating the cedar wall. At night, the chapel's stainless steel skin is gently uplighted using 35-watt CMH lamps in low pedestal washlights.
