Research Paper Summary

A total of 22 research papers were presented, three of which are summarized here. Stanley Gatland, Saint-Gobain Corp., presented "Dynamic Daylighting: Measuring the Impacts of a High-Performance Daylighting System on Occupant Health, Satisfaction and Productivity" (Co-authors: B. Abboushi and I. Elzeyadi, Univ. of Oregon). The study examined the need to balance visual and acoustic comfort in buildings that have mostly glass facades. When daylighting is included in building design, one of the goals is improving human visual performance, and it is generally recognized that the amount of light provided must be controlled. However, issues of privacy, acoustics and workflow can arise as well. Sound masking can help address the acoustics issues, and thoughtful arrangement of work areas can help with the work- flow. The authors concluded that business goals need to align with employee health and well-being, which in turn can help make the business goals more attainable.
